You can’t download a version of Parallels Desktop that lets you run emulated systems on Windows or Linux platforms the way you can with VMware Fusion. Keep in mind that you need to buy a license for any virtual Windows systems, except for developer betas. You can also install any supported system from a disk image or DVD, as well as import an existing Windows system over a network after installing Parallels’ transfer software on the original machine. On these devices, the download menu includes multiple flavors of Android, Linux, and Windows. On a Mac with an Intel CPU, you can create virtual systems that run any Intel-based Windows or Linux versions, plus any recent Intel-based versions of macOS from your recovery partition. However, this special version doesn’t support any of the tight host-guest integration features that Parallels offers to those running macOS guest systems on Intel machines. If you’re running macOS Monterey, you can run a special version of it virtually. You can also run ARM-based versions of Linux-Parallels has a menu that lets you download and install ARM-based Debian, Fedora, Kali Linux, or Ubuntu. On an Apple Silicon Mac, Parallels lets you run the freely available and ARM-based developer beta versions of Windows 10 or Windows 11. What Platforms Does Parallels Desktop Support? You can also purchase a one-time upgrade to the latest, single-license version of Parallels Desktop's Standard edition for $49.99. If, however, you’ve already bought a one-time license to the Standard edition, you can upgrade to a Pro subscription for $49.99 per year instead of paying the full Pro version subscription price. I strongly recommend going with the subscription, because the Parallels app is so deeply integrated with macOS, and because new iterations of macOS often require new versions of Parallels. You can try any version free for 14 days. The Pro and Business editions cost $99.99 per year. The subscription includes any upgrades to new versions of the software during the payment period, while anyone who buys a permanent license option is not eligible for free version updates. Students can get the Standard edition for $39.99 per year. The Standard edition, which is intended for home users, costs either a one-time permanent-license fee of $99.99, or $79.99 per year for a subscription. ![]() ![]() ![]() A personal favorite of Kaiser Wilhelm II, Falkenhayn was faced with a problem: The war against France, Belgium, and Britain was not going as planned by Prussian strategists. Descended from a long line of Prussian military men, he was a cold, rational, distant man. The operation was the brainchild of Erich von Falkenhayn, chief of the German general staff as the year 1915 was coming to a close. Men on all sides were bled to death but ultimately, Falkenhayn’s big push achieved nothing.Operation Gericht-which means “judgment” or “tribunal”-was the German offensive of the Battle of Verdun. ![]() After ten months of fighting, the city had been flattened, and the Germans and French, between them, had lost 260,000 men – one death for every 90 seconds of the battle. The French, under the stewardship of Generals Pétain and Nivelle regained much of what they had lost. The Battle of Verdun wound down, then fizzled out entirely, officially ending on 18 December 1916. Falkenhayn responded by calling a temporary halt at Verdun and transferring men east to aid the Austrians. On the Eastern Front, the Russians attacked the Austrians, who, in turn, appealed to the Germans for help. Haig brought forward the offer to 1 July.ĭuring June 1916, the attack and counterattack at Verdun continued. Joffre responded angrily that the French army would ‘cease to exist’ by then. Haig, concerned that the new recruits to the British Army were not yet battle-ready, offered 15 August 1916 as a start date. Joffre demanded that his British counterpart, Sir Douglas Haig, open up the new offensive on the Somme, to the south of Verdun, to take the pressure off his beleaguered men. Serving under Pétain was General Robert Nivelle who famously promised that the Germans on ne passe pas, ‘they shall not pass’, a quote often attributed to Pétain.īut the French were suffering grievous losses. Every day, while under continuous fire, 2,000 lorries made a return trip along the 45-mile Voie Sacrée (‘Sacred Way’) bringing in vital supplies and reinforcements to be fed into the furnace that had become Verdun. Pétain managed to protect the only road leading into the city that remained open to the French. Galvanised into action, Joffre dispatched his top general, Henri-Philippe Pétain (pictured), to organise a stern defence of the city. ![]() Waking Joffre from his slumber, Briand insisted that he take the situation more seriously: ‘You may not think losing Verdun a defeat – but everyone else will’. Joseph Joffre, the French commander, was slow to respond until the exasperated French prime minister, Aristide Briand, paid a night-time visit. Verdun, which held a symbolic tradition among the French, was deemed not so important by the upper echelon of France’s military. 1,200 German guns lined over only eight miles pounded the city which, despite intelligence warning of the impending attack, remained poorly defended. On 21 February 1916, the Battle of Verdun began. The place to do this, Falkenhayn declared, would be Verdun.Īn ancient town, Verdun in northeastern France, was, in 1915, surrounded by a string of sixty interlocked and reinforced forts. If they do so,’ he continued, ‘the forces of France will bleed to death’. In a ‘Christmas memorandum’ to the German kaiser, Wilhelm II, Falkenhayn proposed an offensive that would compel the French to ‘throw in every man they have. But to destroy Britain’s will, Germany had first to defeat France. Rupert Colley summarises one such push – the Battle of Verdun.Īt the end of 1915, the German commander-in-chief, Erich von Falkenhayn, decided that Germany’s ‘arch enemy’ was not France, but Britain. Each side looked for a ‘Big Push’ that would break the opposing line of defence and bring about victory. A year later, the situation was no better. As 1914 drew to a close, the Western Front had become a permanent fixture of trenches stretching 400 miles from the English Channel to Switzerland. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Writer(s): AARON CONERLY ROBERTSON, MICHAEL EDWARD SWANK, JOSHUA COLE PELTIER, LUCAS GENRE BURLEIGH, MICHAEL AUSTIN DORE, JOHNATHAN DANE RITTERLyrics powered by www.musixmatch. I thought not having the wi-fi set up in my apartment would make me look incompetent and rude to my new roommate. I hurt myself because there was a delay in the installation of wireless Internet in my apartment. Part of my hatred of myself came from the reasons I harmed myself that day. I was praying to God for relief from my misery as I hurt myself. I could not see that I was putting myself through a misery that God would never want me to experience. I was praying to God for relief from my misery as I did so. The same day I wrote the intentionally vague line in my journal-I hurt myself and was cruel to myself-I had also sunk my nails into my calves until I drew blood. Even in the privacy of my journal, and even to God in prayer, I could not bear to write down the fact that, over the past several months, when I felt extremely stressed, overwhelmed or frustrated, I had started slapping myself. Part of hating myself came from my inability to be honest about what I had done to myself that morning. I also want to remind him that he has always been, is, and always will be loved unconditionally by God, a truth that is easier for his future self to accept. I wish I could reach out to myself across time and tell him that life will get better as he asks for help. Reading those lines now makes me pensive, sorrowful and a little scared. "I think he has thought of everything, unless the authorities pull something new on him out of cloud nine."Īround the same period we find clouds seven and thirty-nine, in The San Mateo Times, April 1952 and Ross’s Hustlers, 1956, respectively: 'Cloud nine' comes a little later, for example, in The Oxnard Press-Courier, August 1946: "Cloud eight, befuddled on account of drinking too much liquor." The early references all come from mid 20th century USA and the earliest that I've found is in Albin Pollock's directory of slang, The Underworld Speaks, 1935: The imagery was originally of a 'cloud cuckoo land' or 'head in the clouds' dreaminess, induced by either intoxication or inspiration, rather than the 'idyllic happiness' that we now associate with the phrase. It seems that it is the clouds themselves, rather than the number of them, that were in the thoughts of those who coined this phrase. Early examples of 'cloud' expressions include clouds seven, eight, nine and even thirty-nine. Also, the fact that nine is far from the only number that has been linked with clouds, argues against those origins. To single out the last but one stage of either is rather like attributing the source of the 'whole nine yards' to American Football, where it is ten yards rather than nine that is a significant measure. ![]() To begin with, both the cloud classifications and the Buddhist stages to enlightenment have ten levels. Neither of these explanations holds water. 'On cloud nine' is no exception.Ī commonly heard explanation is that the expression originated as one of the classifications of cloud which were defined by the US Weather Bureau in the 1950s, in which 'Cloud Nine' denotes the fluffy cumulonimbus type that are considered so attractive.Īnother explanation is that the phrase derives from Buddhism and that Cloud Nine is one of the stages of the progress to enlightenment of a Bodhisattva (one destined to become a Buddha). Whenever a phrase includes a number, like the whole nine yards, at sixes and sevens etc., then attempts to find its derivation usually focus on the significance of the number. That sounds absurd, which is probably why some people argue the intent is to simply prohibit anyone from storing the gun only in the glove box or utility console without any further protection. In theory, that means we take a legally stored handgun in a DOJ approved portable safe, and the minute we place it in any one of those actual storage spots in the vehicle, it becomes illegal. "Utility compartment" could be practically any storage bin, cup holder, coin tray, or even those flaps on the back of the driver/passenger seats. That lack of clarity is the problem I guess. Or if the gun is kept loaded versus unloaded, with mags in the safe but not "attached" to the gun in any way? Wondering if anyone has any further input. Good info here, though still not totally definitive: This has been discussed here and there but no good conclusion has been reached as far as I can see, such as this thread from a decade ago: From there, opinions seem split as to whether the separate locking safe insert is nullified by being in that center console, or if the intent of the law is to prohibit folks from using the standard center console (or glove box), some of which are lockable from the factory, and considering their firearm secured (which seems like a bad idea). Most seem to agree the term refers to the center console. The confusion seems to stem from the vague nature of what constitutes a "utility compartment". But I'm wondering about the legality of storing a gun in the center console, which is arguably prohibited by PC12026.1 where it mentions that the "utility or glove compartment" as not being permissible. I'm fascinated by the products from Lockerdown, Console Vault, etc, which basically insert a custom-fitting safe into the center console of many larger vehicles (mainly truck and SUV models). ![]() ![]() ![]() Imagine if a new Tony Hawk's game served up tricks but replaced every Ollie and kickflip with increasingly gruesome ways of mangling mutants and you're pretty much there. When the next full-margin rupture happens, that region will suffer the worst natural disaster in the history of North America.” In this eye-opening article, she states: “In the Pacific Northwest, the area of impact will cover some hundred and forty thousand square miles, including Seattle, Tacoma, Portland, Eugene, Salem (the capital city of Oregon), Olympia (the capital of Washington), and some seven million people. In 2015, The New Yorker Magazine came out with an article titled “The Really Big One” in which author Kathryn Schulz discusses what will happen when a massive earthquake hits the Pacific Northwest. Think of how much energy is being released along a fault the length of 620 miles! The sheer scale of the zone means that when an earthquake occurs, it’s likely to be massive. The Juan de Fuca plate is slipping steadily beneath the northwestern portion of North America. The Cascadia Subduction Zone, for instance, runs for 620 miles along the Pacific Northwest. Why do subduction zones cause the biggest earthquakes? The answer is a simple one: scale. The biggest danger of a subduction zone is that they can cause massive, catastrophic earthquakes. In a subduction zone, one tectonic plate bends and slides beneath another, returning back into Earth’s mantle (the hotter layer beneath the crust). Occasionally however, at the borders where they meet, it is not. ![]() Most of the time their movement is slow, harmless, and all but undetectable. Tectonic plates are those slabs of mantle and crust that, in their epochs-long drift, rearrange the earth’s continents and oceans. The “subduction zone” part refers to a region of the planet where one tectonic plate is sliding underneath (subducting) another. The “Cascadia” part of its name comes from the Cascade Range, a chain of volcanic mountains that follow the same course a hundred or so miles inland. It starts at the northern end of California near Cape Mendocino, runs up the entire length of Oregon and Washington, and continues to at least the middle of Vancouver Island, Canada. The Cascadia subduction zone runs seven hundred miles off the coast of the Pacific Northwest. ![]() |
