Will have to consult a lawyer about it and see if I can get further clarification. That sounds absurd, which is probably why some people argue the intent is to simply prohibit anyone from storing the gun only in the glove box or utility console without any further protection. In theory, that means we take a legally stored handgun in a DOJ approved portable safe, and the minute we place it in any one of those actual storage spots in the vehicle, it becomes illegal. "Utility compartment" could be practically any storage bin, cup holder, coin tray, or even those flaps on the back of the driver/passenger seats. That lack of clarity is the problem I guess. I checked that site and it's the same info, just not formatted as well, so I stuck with the deansafe link. Yeah "deansafe" got their info (and they mention this fact) from the website of an attorney (). If that wasn't enough, does it perhaps change anything if the driver has a valid CCW? Or if the gun is kept loaded versus unloaded, with mags in the safe but not "attached" to the gun in any way? Wondering if anyone has any further input. Good info here, though still not totally definitive: This has been discussed here and there but no good conclusion has been reached as far as I can see, such as this thread from a decade ago: From there, opinions seem split as to whether the separate locking safe insert is nullified by being in that center console, or if the intent of the law is to prohibit folks from using the standard center console (or glove box), some of which are lockable from the factory, and considering their firearm secured (which seems like a bad idea). Most seem to agree the term refers to the center console. The confusion seems to stem from the vague nature of what constitutes a "utility compartment". But I'm wondering about the legality of storing a gun in the center console, which is arguably prohibited by PC12026.1 where it mentions that the "utility or glove compartment" as not being permissible. I'm fascinated by the products from Lockerdown, Console Vault, etc, which basically insert a custom-fitting safe into the center console of many larger vehicles (mainly truck and SUV models).
